Library Administration
University Library Committee
Charge to the University Library Committee
The University Library Committee was formed in 1876 under the
chairmanship of Professor Daniel Bonbright. Its purpose then,
as now, was to make advisory decisions on library policies.
Its importance over the years has increased with the advent
of the new University Library. It has evolved into not only
an advisory body, but also a liaison between the University
Library, faculty, administration, and students.
Topics for committee action may originate in three ways:
- letters sent to the chair or Librarian from the University community;
- suggestions made by the Librarian;
- ideas brought up by members of the Committee itself
Decisions made by the University Library Committee are of an advisory nature.
The Committee does not allocate resources, although it does review the library budget.
The Committee also reviews and approves general library policy.
The Committee meets at least once a quarter, more often when the need arises.
Faculty are appointed by the President upon recommendation of the Committee on Committees; undergraduate students are appointed by the President upon recommendation by ASG; graduate students are appointed by the President upon recommendation of the Dean of the Graduate School. The chair is designated by the President.
