Parking at Northwestern University
For anyone with a car who
wishes to park on campus, one-day parking permits must be displayed
on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6 during the meetings. There
are no parking restrictions on campus on Saturday, so no permit
is needed. Anyone attending the meetings who wishes to park
on campus can request free parking permits by contacting David
Easterbrook directly prior to arrival. The permits will be
mailed in advance. Do not park in a campus lot for the Thursday
or Friday meetings without displaying a permit. Without a permit,
you will receive a fine and may be towed. If you do not have
a parking permit in advance of your arrival, you may purchase
one for $5 at the Parking Office in the University Police headquarters
at 1819 Hinman Ave. on Thursday. We will give you
a permit for Friday at the Thursday meetings.
Driving from the Hilton
Garden Inn to the Northwestern Campus
Because of the many one-way
streets, the route is a bit complex. When you exit the parking
facility do not turn onto Maple St., rather drive straight
ahead on Clark St. Continue on Clark St. and turn right at
Sherman St. Sherman is one-way and you will need to take the
first left, onto Church St., so get into the left lane on Sherman
as quickly as possible. Church is also a one-way street. Stay
on the left side because you will need to turn left when you
reach Hinman Ave., a four-way stop. Continue on Hinman until
it ends at Sheridan Rd. At Sheridan Rd., turn right and you
will see a left hand turn onto the campus just ahead. Shortly
after entering the campus, you will see a two-level parking
facility on your right. Park there, and be sure to display
the parking permit you were provided. If you did not request
a parking permit in advance, do not park on campus until you
have purchased one. Purchase information is found above in
"Parking at Northwestern University."
Walking from the Hilton
Garden Inn to the Northwestern Campus
When you leave the Maple St. entrance to the Hilton
Garden Inn, walk left on Maple St. At the north end of the Hilton
Garden Inn is University Pl. Cross Maple St. and notice the continuation
of University Pl. just ahead. Turn right on to University Pl.
and continue walking under the EL tracks. The next intersection
you reach is of three streets. Sherman Ave. and University Pl.
meet at right angles; Elgin Rd. cuts through the intersection
diagonally. Cross this intersection and keep walking on University
Pl. University Pl. ends as a cul-de-sac at the intersection of
Sheridan Rd. and Chicago Ave. You will see the arch entry to
campus across the street. Follow the sidewalk through the arch
to the library.
Walking from the University
Library to the Program of African Studies
Leave the University Library by the Main Entrance.
Just past the security check, turn right toward the exit up the
stairs. Once outside the library walk left (away from the lake)
and follow the sidewalk toward the traffic light at the intersection
of Sheridan Rd. and Foster Ave. Cross Sheridan Rd. and turn right
walking north one block to Library Pl. The Program of African
Studies is 620 Library Pl., the second building on the left.
Walking from Norris University
Center to the Panofsky Home
Leave Norris University Center by the main entrance.
Walk left immediately after leaving the building down the sidewalk
incline. Keep walking straight ahead past the parking facility
until you reach the entrance to campus from Sheridan Rd. At this
point you have two choices. Cross here without a traffic light.
Or turn right and walk to the traffic light two blocks ahead
and cross there at the intersection of Sheridan Rd. and Chicago
Ave. If you cross at the light, back track to Sheridan Rd. across
from where you started out. Follow Sheridan Rd. to a fork: Sheridan
Rd. goes to the left, and Judson Ave. goes to the right. Follow
along Judson Ave. until you reach the Panofsky home, 1229.
