African Posters: The Collection
The Collection: Brief description
The Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University is the largest separate Africana collection in the world. Among its resources are over 4000 posters reflecting contemporary African history and culture. A total of 366 of these posters have been digitized to date for this web site. The posters generally represent three themes: the 1970's liberation movements in the former Portuguese colonies; the Anti-Apartheid groups flourishing outside of South Africa in the 1970's and 1980's; and political campaign posters from the historic South African election of 1994.
Catalog access
Individual MARC records will be available in the library's online catalog (NUcat). The catalog records are also retrievable on this web site through the search page. Converted to SGML format, they are searched using the Livelink search engine.
Access to the original materials
The original posters have been deacidified and encapsulated in mylar, and are housed in the Herskovits Library. The materials are non-circulating. For assistance check with the department.
