University Archives Item Highlighted in Smithsonian Magazine

A ransom note from the University Archives' Harold S. Hulbert Papers appears as an illustration in the August, 2008 issue of Smithsonian magazine. The note relates to the 1924 murder of Bobby Franks by the notorious Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. Hulbert served as a defense psychiatrist at the pair's sensational trial.

Simon Baatz, author of Criminal Minds, the Smithsonian article on the crime and trial, used the Hulbert Papers in researching his forthcoming book The Thrill of It: Leopold, Loeb, and the Murder that Shocked Chicago (HarperCollins, 2008).
