This year it might be Geronimo: The Man, His Time, His Place; or The Complete Plays of Bernard Shaw; or The Supremes: A Saga of Motown Dreams. It might be sheet music for Broadway musicals or classical recordings on vinyl. Whatever you’re looking for (or didn’t know you were looking for), there’s always a fabulous bargain on books, CDs, and DVDs, videos, and records at Northwestern University Library's annual book sale.

The sale opens to the Northwestern community on Wednesday, May 15, and to the general public on Thursday, May 16. Held in the Ver Steeg Lounge of the Main Library at 1970 Campus Drive on the Evanston campus, this annual event has been eagerly anticipated by book enthusiasts and collectors for more than 60 years now. “We actually start receiving calls a week after the sale has ended asking when the next one will be held,” says Toby Worscheck, the sale’s coordinator. “Last year we even had alumni travel from as far away as Minneapolis, Minnesota to attend!”

Worscheck says this year’s stock of more than 6,000 items is more eclectic than in years past, including a large number of sheet music titles, vinyl records in excellent condition, and  especially impressive collections in Art, African studies, Native American studies, fiction, history, and hundreds of Northwestern University Press overstock titles in mint condition.

Northwestern community members with a valid WildCard or an alumni ID can shop the sale on Wednesday, May 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The sale opens to the public at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 16, and closes for the day at 4:00 p.m.

On Friday, May 17, everyone is welcome to take part in “Buck-a-Bag Day,” when visitors can fill up a bag with books, videos and records for only $1 or a box for just $2.

Until “Buck-a-Bag Day,” hardcover books cost only $3 each; quality paperbacks $2; and mass-market paperbacks are 50 cents each.

Proceeds from the sale support the Library’s collections.
