| Northwestern faculty, staff and currently registered students may gain access to the University of Chicago libraries by showing their valid Northwestern ID at the building entrance. They are also eligible to receive borrowing privileges at all libraries on the University of Chicago campus.
Who Is Eligible?
This service is available to Northwestern University faculty, staff and currently registered students who have library privileges at Northwestern.
The access and borrowing arrangements do not apply to research assistants; alumni; retired faculty (except emeritus faculty); visiting scholars; children and/or domestic partners of faculty, staff or students; fee borrowers; corporate borrowers; etc.
Obtaining a University of Chicago Borrower's Card
To obtain a University of Chicago borrower's card, you have two options:
To receive a card immediately, you may go to the ID and Privileges office at the University of Chicago's Regenstein Library (see hours below). You will be asked to complete the necessary form. Staff will then verify your status and issue you a card.
To arrange to have the card sent to the Northwestern Main Library, you may visit the Library Privileges office at Northwestern's Main Library Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm and complete an application for a University of Chicago borrower's card. The form will be forwarded to the University of Chicago's privileges office and the library card will be available for pickup from the Northwestern privileges office approximately 5 working days after the initial application has been filled out.
Online University of Chicago Privileges Request Form for Northwestern Community Members
The card will be valid for an academic year and expires on October 7th. It must be renewed annually.

The University of Chicago charges $3.00 per day for overdue recalled materials, $1.00 per hour for overdue reserve materials, and $100.00 to $150.00 per title for lost books.
Returning Books
In addition to returning material directly to the University of Chicago, Northwestern borrowers may return books to the Northwestern Main Library Circulation desk.
Please note: any University of Chicago Library item returned to the Northwestern University Library will not be checked in until it reaches the University of Chicago library. Please plan accordingly by assuming a minimum 7-day transit between the libraries, during which fines may accrue.
