Joseph Valentin Eybel
(1741–1805)


Born in Vienna, educated by Jesuits, from 1773 to 1779 Professor of Church Law at the University of Vienna, from 1779 on Josephine administrator in Linz, where he personally supervised almost all monastery confiscations. Also an aggressive pamphletist, Eybel was the author of Was ist der Papst? ("What is the pope?", 1786), one of the most successful antipapal pamphlets of the Josephine era. Excommunicated ca. 1786. Died 1805 in Linz.
