Gaming (Lower Austria)
Carthusian
Founded by Duke Albrecht II in 1330, dissolved in 1782.
The library, lavishly rebuilt under Abbot Joseph Kristelli von Bachau, contained 20,000 volumes when it was confiscated. Most books (12,000) were taken to Vienna for the collection of the university library. Today, the Nationalbibliothek in Vienna lists 106 Gaming incunabula in its catalog as well as numerous manuscripts. Since 1972, a branch of the Austrian Ethnographical Museum, Vienna, has been located in the former monastery.
