United States Decennial Censuses

The Government Information Department has a rich collection of official copies in print of the Census of the Population and Housing of United States conducted between 1790 and 1970. We also have a series of GeoLytics Census Data Products for 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 Census and CD/DVDs for 1990 and 2000 Census distributed by U.S. Census Bureau. Population and Housing variables are available at many geography levels including block, block groups, Census Tract, ZCTA (Zip Code), Place, County, State, MCA, MSA and More. For other historic census data, you may also check with ICPSR and the University of Virginia Library’s Historical Census site. For specific details you may consult with the American FactFinder at the U.S. Government census web site.

Many of the CDs owned by the library are installed on the public PCs of in the GovInfo department. Extracted data files (in dBase File format) can be converted or input into statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS and STATA. Electronic maps or GIS datasets can also be generated. ArcGIS 9.1 with StreetMap, Geostatistical Analyst, and Spatial Analyst are installed on each GovInfo public computer.
