Haiti declared its independence from France in 1804. Northwestern University Library departments of Special Collections and Africana collaborate in displaying contemporary material in celebration of this anniversary.

The Hans Christian Andersen Collection at Northwestern: Illustrated Children's Books from Around the World

Northwestern University Library owns nearly 1500 children's books submitted for review by the jury of the Hans Christian Andersen medal, the most important award given internationally to authors and illustrators of children's books. This exhibit provides a display of prominent writers and richly illustrated works. The McCormick Library of Special Collections' Andersen jury dossiers will provide insight into children's literature cultures far removed from our own.

Recent Gifts to the Northwestern University Library

An annual exhibit of recently acquired books and other information resources, which acknowledges and thanks the donors whose generosity has made these acquisitions possible.

 Chicago Hand Bookbinders

May 3 - June 10, 2004

This annual Northwestern exhibit highlights current work created by members of the Chicago Hand Bookbinders. Books on display range from traditional fine bindings to offbeat alternative book structures.

 50th Anniversary of Northwestern University's Transportation Center

March 22 - April 30, 2004

Highlighting its unique collections, accomplishments, and publications, the Transportation Library will commemorate its 50th Anniversary with this exhibit. It will include a timeline showing the technological and regulatory state of all forms of transportation in 1954 in contrast to contemporary forms.

The Elevator and the City

January 19 - March 19, 2004

This exhibit addresses the technical and scientific details of the elevator as reflected in the Library's holdings. It also focuses on the elevator as a cultural phenomenon of urban life, highlighting Chicago as a city of enormous growth due to the elevator.

Recent Acquisitions/New Directions

November 8, 2004 - January 31, 2005

Latest support for the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections comes in the form of an endowment from Mrs. Charles Deering McCormick in honor of her late husband. This exhibit is composed of books purchased with the McCormick Endowment over the last three years. This endowment has enabled the Library to collect in the areas of emblem books, model books from the 16th and 17th centuries, fete or festival books, mnemonic or memory books, milestones in the history of collecting and early museums, illustrated books, architectural books, and books on the history of the Netherlands. The items comprising this exhibit are only a small part of the McCormick Library of Special Collection's acquisitions over the past three years.

Accompanying the exhibit is a lecture by Claudia Swan, Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at Northwestern University. The lecture will be held on November 10, 2004, in the Charles Deering McCormick Library, Reading Room, 1970 Campus Drive, Evanston, Il. A reception will follow the lecture.
