Victoria Exhibit

Rare books, maps, and other materials from the Northwestern University Library comprise this exhibit which examines the reign of Queen Victoria on the 100th anniversary of her death. Complimenting the exhibit are Victoriana memorabilia on loan to the NU Library from private collections.

Located on the first level of the main library (Evanston Campus) the exhibit will run from November 1st through December 15th, 2001.

Princess Victoria was crowned Queen at the age of 18 in 1837. She was married 3 years later to the German Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Victoria had 9 children and 37 grandchildren, most of whom married into other European royal families, earning her the title "Grandmother of Europe."

At the time of her death, Victoria's empire extended across the globe. Her 4 major dominions included Canada, Australia, South Africa, and India.

As the Queen lay dying in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, a bloody war between the British army and the Boer States was waging in southern Africa.

Two milestones of Victoria's reign were marked by anniversary celebrations: the Golden Jubilee of 1887 and the Diamond Jubilee of 1897.

When Victoria died in 1901 at the age of 81, she had reigned longer than any other British monarch before her; after 64 years, the Victorian Age came to close.
