Library Facilities
Library Copy Service
The University Library provides public self-service copy machines located throughout Deering and the main Library for the convenience of library users. There is a color copier in the Art Collection on Level 3 of Deering and a map copier in Government Publications on Level 1 of Deering. Some copiers can be operated only by magnetic card, while others also accept cash. The cost per black and white copy is 8 cents with a card or 10 cents with cash for letter or legal size copies. Color copies cost 75 cents. Oversize copies (11 x 17") cost double. There are three kinds of copy cards: NU WildCARDs, Visitor Debit and Vending Cards, and Faculty/Staff Copy Cards. These cards may be used in all of the copy machines in Main and Deering, Science & Engineering, and Math Libraries, as well as on the Chicago campus. In addition, the Visitor Debit and Vending Card, like the NU ID WildCARD, can be used in most other vending machines on campus.
PURCHASING A COPY CARD
Visitor Debit and Vending Cards may be purchased from vending machines located on Level 1 in the Information Commons and near Government Publications and also on Level 2 in the Student Lounge and in the Link. To purchase a new card, insert a $1 bill; press the orange button ONLY once and remove the card from the lower right-hand slot. The machine will automatically deduct 75 cents from the card as a one-time fee; so if you want to copy more than a few pages with your new card, you will need to add value to the card before you use it. The machine will accept $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills to add value but will not accept coins. Since you may add value to your card at any time, DO NOT THROW IT AWAY WHEN IT IS EMPTY. Please write your name on the card. If you should lose it and your name is on it, you may be able to retrieve it from Lost and Found at the Circulation Desk.
Faculty/Staff Copy Cards may only be obtained by charging against CUFS accounts. These cards are available at the Circulation Services Desk, Level 1, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They can be used only in copy machines in the libraries listed above, not in other vending machines, and may be purchased only in denominations of $25 each.
ADDING VALUE TO A COPY CARD AT A PHOTOCOPIER
You may also add value to your card by using any of the photocopiers that accept both cards and cash. You can insert coins or $1 and $5 bills to add value to the card at a photocopier. Please note, however, that if your card is damaged, NO MORE THAN $5 WILL BE REFUNDED.USING A COPY CARD TO MAKE COPIES
To use your card, insert it, with its magnetic strip down, in the slot of the card reader and the current value of the card will be displayed. Each time you press the print button, the cost of the copy will be deducted. When you have finished, press the card return button once. Your card should be returned to you in a few seconds.
USING CASH TO MAKE COPIES
Most of the photocopiers accept coins or $1 and $5 bills. If they are out of change, there are $1 and $5 bill changers in the student lounge on Level 2. Larger bills may be changed into smaller bills (but not into coins) at the Circulation Desk or at Norris University Center.MACHINE FEATURES
A variety of copying options is available. In addition to letter size copies (8 1/2 x 11"), available on all machines, legal size copies (8 1/2 x 14") are available in Periodicals, Reference, Core, Level 3 Link, Government Publications, University Archives, Music, and Art. Machines that produce oversized copies with 11 x 17" paper are in Periodicals, Reference, Government Publications, University Archives, Music, and Art. There is a double charge for oversized copying. There is a color copier in Art and a map copier in Government Publications. Machines equipped with top-loading document feeders are in Periodicals, Core, and Level 5 Link. All of these machines are capable of reducing and enlarging the images. Before pressing the print button, be sure the machine is set for the kind of copy you want. Specific operating instructions are posted on each machine.REPORTING MACHINE PROBLEMS
If a copy machine displays an error message or if you have other problems with it, please report it, following instructions posted near the machine, so that repairs can be made. Users should not attempt to repair machines on their own.REFUNDS
For a refund, go to the Information Desk on Level 1. THE MAXIMUM REFUND FOR A WildCARD IS $5. Refunds are given for bad copies and damaged cards. No refund is given for lost or stolen cards or for unused copies on cards.CARING FOR LIBRARY MATERIALS
The stress placed upon library materials during photocopying can be very damaging. When using the "book friendly" photocopiers, place the page of the book or journal face down on the glass plate so that it hugs the machine. For optimal results copy one page at a time. Align the item with the upper left corner of the glass plate. Close the cover and begin copying. Avoid placing pressure on bindings, which can break spines and loosen pages. Help keep these materials in good condition for students in years to come.COPYING MICROFILM AND MICROFICHE
Hard-copy prints of microfilm and microfiche can be made for 5 cents a page in the Periodicals & Newspapers Reading Room. You may pay for your copies only by WildCARD, Visitor Debit and Vending Card, or Faculty/Staff Copy Card.COPYRIGHT LAWS
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 US Code) governs the making of photocopies of copyrighted materials. The person using a copy machine is liable for any infringement.QUESTIONS & SUGGESTIONS
