What is the impact of a gift to the Library Annual Fund?
In the last five years, gifts to the Library's Annual Fund have enabled the Library to enhance the collections with nearly $1 million worth of intellectual materials beyond what its regular budget for collections allows. Simply stated, the "wish list" of materials librarians believe will distinguish the collections is accomplished each year through the Library Annual Fund. Gifts to the Library Annual Fund allow us to add materials beyond monographs and serials including multi-volume sets, manuscripts, indexes, CD-ROMS, databases, and microfiche needed by a first-rate academic and research library.
How important is it to support Northwestern University Library?
Once equivalent to its peers, such as Duke University and the University of Chicago, Northwestern ranks a distant third in its allocated budget to support the collections. In the 1999 Association of Research Libraries Statistics,* Northwestern ranks 34, behind Duke (17) and the University of Chicago (20) in total materials expenditures - that is, what it spends each year on all scholarly materials for Northwestern schools, academic programs, faculty and students. Although the University has increased the budget allocations for the Library and its collections, it would take double-digit increases over many years to bring Northwestern Library into parity, once again, with its peers.

Why should I give to the Library Annual Fund?
Even if you support another part of the University, we ask you to make an additional gift to the Library. The ability of Northwestern to define academic excellence and to recruit star faculty will rest on a Library with collections and staff that support such intellectual ambitions. Through your gift to the Library, you directly participate in Northwestern University's academic aspirations. In fact, you help accomplish them.
Donors of $50 or more are listed in the Library's annual report. Donors of $1,000 or more are recognized in the Library's Deering Society.
