Making a Gift: Endowments
What is an Endowed Fund?
Gifts made to the endowment are essential to the Library. They provide a steady income for the purchase of academic materials - materials that support Northwestern's competitive intellectual community. Every endowment helps Northwestern maintain one of the top private research libraries in the nation. An endowed fund will give you an opportunity to enhance studies in a particular field, honor the memory of a loved one, and support Northwestern academics.
How do I create an Endowed Fund?
- The minimum gift to create an endowed book fund is $10,000.
- Endowing an entire collection can be up to $50,000.
- Technology endowments start at $25,000, and fund resources like electronic databases or new reference rooms.
- Endowments are usually payable over 5 years.

What opportunities are available with Endowed Funds?
You can establish a fund individually, or through a group, foundation or corporation. Endowed gifts have no limit, so you, your family, and your friends may continue to add to your gift and enjoy seeing the fund's impact on the Library as it grows. Materials purchased through endowed gifts are distinguished from other acquisitions by unique bookplates, and donors themselves are recognized each year in Northwestern's Annual Report.
