Introductions were made. The NIDL home page was discussed. Joan Coogan maintains the web page for the group, and suggestions can be sent to her. NIDL members should check the home page for mistakes. Minutes will be posted to the web site. Shared collections to be on the mailing list.

Roberta Palen of the Chicago Public Library introduced Pam Morgan, new librarian. She described the CPLs day-long all staff conference. This year the documents librarians put together a workshop "Surfing with Uncle Sam" to present at conference. They will be putting together a 3 hour program for the branches. They do want to extend this service to the branch libraries, and a lot of training will be involved. Funding question-- all funding is coming from internal sources.

Walt Bauman of Depaul discussed their selfstudy. New compact shelving. Cutting back on the selections because of space problems, and using the needs and offers list. Computer Services Librarian set up a terminal for GPO Access and StatUSA. Use has been large, but expect it to grow.


John Marshall Law, Ann Abramson. Relatively new, learning, just completed the biennial survey, looking at the self study. Biggest news, two public access terminals for gov docs, library has limited openess to the public. Doing the best the can. The law school has new space in the building next door, library may gain by a future move.

Northeastern, Patrice Stearley. Selfstudy. Considers it painful process. Discussion of how to make it easier. Subscribes to CIS Congressional Compass. Through a cooperative State agreement, costs less than the paper annual. All CIS indexing Full text of various congressional documents and reports for various dates.Some general discussion comparaing Compass to other CIS products. Northeastern going through networking nightmares. Moving to DRA.

Pegeen Bassett, Norhwestern Law, recently set up a web page for gpo access and other government information. A lot of instructional guides, especially for legislative histories, Illinois and U.S. interactive. Being proofread by web page committee. Main university library has congressional compass, law folks piggy back on that. Northwestern migrating to Voyager by the spring. Increased the public access internet terminals to 10 for non affiliated people, businesses and general public.

U.S. Courts Library, John Klaus. Integrated library system, public terminals. Moving to Sirsi.

Mt. Prospect. Julie Collins. Self study completed. Not enjoyable. Internet provider for the community of Mt. Prospect. One Gov Doc terminal and cdroms.

Oak Park, Trish Aiken. Self study complete, hated it. Still do not have internet access to the public.

ITT, Sharon Manassa. Selfstudy. assistant helped with aspects of it. Trials and tribulations with children. 11 web accessible terminals.

Lake Forest College, John Brandt, extremely close to congressional compass, but went with Lexis/Nexis. Merged the library with the Computer Services, causes some strain. Illinois Initiative.

Pam Morgan, CPL. training class discussion. part of the CLS training.

Dan Blewett, Loyola Libraries. Personnel changes. No Library Director, going to hire for business/social work library. Law Library is the depository. Do not send anything to the Medical Library in Maywood. Public Access terminals available.

Loyola Libraries, Linda Chia, talked about training students. Got printers through Illinois grant. Problems with Kids.

Mary Sue Preisler, and Michelle Schue, Wheaton College: recent arrival. Shifting to Marcive, profiling taking up time. Do have a web page. Wants to promote gov docs in the library. compact shelving.

Ken Smith University of Chicago, Regenstein Library, reorganize first floor, move card catalog. There is a small gov docs section that is coming back into its own.

Paulette Harding, Poplar Creek Public Library internet room open. Working on the home page. Moving to a Dynix system.

Connie Fleischer, University of Chicago Business Library. cataloging. migration to Horizon.

Annie Moore, Chicago State University. Selfstudy. Profile for Marcive. Barcoding documents collection.

Other news items. Evelyn Doyle (sp), Illinios Valley Community College, has retired; Earl Schumacher has left for Alaska. From Northern Illinois State.

UIC, John A. Shuler: selfstudy, biennial report, DOSFAN, leavings. Retreating from Marcive.

General question about who processes the documents and the level of education for the staffers. Some question of automated procedures.

Unstructured open discussion for the future of NIDL and what is happening at the state and national level. Discussion of Illinois Initiative.

General discussion of whether or not the constitution should be amended to accomodate the idea of a coordinator elect. Circulate the constitutional amendments. Transition period critical. Patrice will write the new language. Nominating committee will be needed for the spring meeting to coordinate the constitutional change.

Election takes place, committee leaves room.
