Meeting Minutes & Resources for Major Microform
|
RoseAnn Vonesh, Chair
I .Approval of minutes from April 3, 1998 meeting - Sharon Manassa approved the minutes from the last NIDL meeting. II. Report by John Brandt from Depository Library Council 1. The reform bill (S.2228) failed to pass with the adjournment of the 105th Congress, and there is little hope that it will pass in the next Congress, either. 2. The Biennial survey is being expanded to include "cost information" (salaries, overhead, etc) as well as number of reference questions, web server hits, etc. Copies of the redone survey will be distributed in the Spring. 3. Feedback was solicited about improving the GPO Access page. Plans are in the works to dramatically expand the site after receiving tons of traffic in light of the Starr Report. 4. There was continued discussion about electronic archiving, and overall policy for electronic collection. 5. Concern was expressed about contracts with microfiche suppliers. 6. Discussion ensued about whether the large DC DLC meeting should occur in the fall or spring, since attendees would not be able to receive government rates in DC hotels in the spring. It was agreed that large and small DLC meetings would be reversed two years from now. III. Statewide Depository Meeting 1. Meeting is scheduled for next May (20-21) following ILA GODORT. The proposed agenda includes revising the state plan, an overview of the new state effort to digitize State Documents, an update on the Illinois Initiative (survey of Illinois State Depository Libraries with "help" directory). Needs and Offers will now be sent via email to Sandy Fritz at the State Library. There was talk of instituting a formal "liaison system" arranged by type of library. IV. Reports from Committees 1. Web Page Committee - original efforts have been scaled down. Current projects being considered are identifying local libraries with major microfiche sets and creating a page w/that information. The group also discussed linking to local government, county and city of Chicago websites. Creating pages including information by and about congressional districts was also discussed. 2. Congressional District Information Committee -- How can we raise profiles with our local congressfolk? What content should be included - what unique contributions could this provide? There was some confusion about the purpose, content, and where this information should be made available. Ann suggested including historical information about the district, as well as major businesses and schools, maps. Also offered was a list of depository libraries in the district and links to sites like Project Votesmart, which provide information about who your district representative is, how you register to vote, etc. We could also provide links to representatives with websites. One example is provided by the 10th district website (www.lib.lfc.edu/govinfo/10th). V. Round Robin - Happenings in our libraries 1. Pegeen Bassett - Northwestern University Law School Library - Northwestern has mostly been preoccupied with its migration to Endeavor, and all that it entails. Pegeen is also now vice chair of the Documents committee in AALL 2. John Brandt - Lake Forest College - reported that their checkin system crashed. 3. Marjorie Bengston - introduced Paula Contreras, the new Assistant Documents Librarian (also known as me). Also reported on status of DOSFAN (Department of State webserver and electronic archive). UIC Docs library receives reference questions from all over the world through DOSFAN as well as their electronic LIBDOCS reference system. UIC also passed their federal inspection 4. Paula Contreras - greeted the room and seconded what Marj said. 5. Steve Sposato - Harold Washington Library (Chicago Public) - Harold Washington is currently in the midst of their self-study. There has been a recent "all staff" in-service day where the class "Surfing with Uncle Sam" was offered. Barbara Ford will be head of reference for the library, and work has been completed on a bibliography of Administrative Decisions. 6. Linda Chia - Loyola University - Loyola was recently inspected (August 3). They have a new dean of libraries as well as two vacant positions. 7. Paula Sennett at the Northwest Municipal Conference -is a quasi-governmental agency that works in conjunction with the Oakton Community College Library. The Conference (one of 3 that covers the Chicago collar suburbs) collection was recently inspected and removed from probationary status. 8. Anne Abramson - John Marshall Law Library - completed their self-study. They have recently migrated to Windows NT from a Windows 3.1 environment. 9. Walt Baumann - Depaul University Law School - Undergoing transfer to DRA (with all the ensuing problems). Had to be inspected twice - filled out self-study, and was inspected because library is a new facility. Passed. 10. RoseAnn Vonesh - Oak Park Public Library (and NIDL coordinator). Is now in charge of information services and is moving away from the wonderful world of documents. Trish Akin will be taking over RoseAnn's duties. 11. Lynne Smith - Northern Illinois Law Library - Also contending with the DRA migration and the FDLP self-study. 12. Trish Akin - Taking over documents duty at Oak Park PL. 13. Earl Schumaker - Government Documents Librarian at Northern Illinois. Has been in Alaska for the past year. There have been a number of personnel changes in his absence, as well as migration to DRA. 14. Benedictine is also undergoing the FDLP self-study and contending with DRA. 15. Dan Blewett - Loyola University - Lewis Library (where this meeting was held) is a new library. Loyola survived the self-study as well as the inspection. Loyola will probably move to a Voyager Endeavor system. 16. Joan Coogan - Temporary Documents Librarian, Northwestern University. Northwestern has recently moved to a Voyager system. Questioning worth of continuing as a GPO Access Gateway. Currently offering set of early USGS duplicate items. 17. Ying Liang - Governor's State University - Currently looking for a library director. GS is a 43% depository, and the collection only has 1 student and 1 LTA in addition to Ling, who is new. Currently undergoing self-study. 18. Julie Collins - Mt. Prospect Public Library - 16% depository. Doing lots of internet training and producing an updated list of elected officials. VI. Elections 1.
