Modified by Robert Pruter on 30 March 2007

Attending: Earl Shumaker, Ed Grosek- NIU

Lynne Smith- NIU Law

Joanne Jalley- IVCC

Marjorie Bergstrom- UIC

Maria Figiel- Krueger- Rock Valley College

Robert Pruter- Lewis University

I. Bob Pruter gave an introduction to Lewis University, discussing its history and its library collection strengths.

II. Bob Pruter gave a talk on how he cleaned up the Lewis University Depository collection after years of mismanagement.

III. John Lamb and Mary Ann Atkins gave a presentation on the Illinois and Michigan Canal Collection, a special collection of local and canal history held by the Lewis University Library.

IV. Roundtable from Libraries:

Maria Figiel-Krueger, Rock Valley College

Rock Valley became a depository in July of 2003. Rockford Public Library left the depository system at that time. They received a $2,000.00 grant for workstations from the State Library. At this time they are selecting 5% because of space concerns.

Marge Bergstrom- UIC

There has been a loss of reference librarians and document libraries are having to do more non-document reference work. They are also in the process of interviewing for a new director.

Robert Pruter- Lewis University

Lewis lost a reference librarian also causing Bob to spend 60% of his time doing reference work. From the $500.00 grant given from the State Library in may, they purchased a monitor.

Earl Shumaker- NIU

Earl is wearing many hats. He is head of documents, branch libraries and doing collection development for education in the library. The reference departments that were situated on each floor of the library are now centrally located on the first floor, with the exception of documents.

Lynne Smith- NIU Law

The Law Library has transferred 10,000 items to storage in recent months. A scanner was bought with the $500.00 grant from the State Library.

Other News:

Earl talked about the Depository Council Meeting in Washington, D.C. The new Public Printer spoke and told of being from the private sector and sees documents in more of a “business model” sense. This was not taken very well from some attendees who see the depository program as a public good, not an avenue to make money.

Also, Earl reminded everyone that if they had any input regarding the State Plan, that Mike Ragen was eager to take any suggestions.

VI. Elections: Because both the Coordinator (Kristina Waldron of Northwestern) and Secretary (Tiffeni Fontno of UIC) for the year 2003-2004 had left their respective institutions before the Fall meeting, members at the meeting chose to hold a special election and elected new officers for the year.
