NIDL Fall Meeting
John Shuler presided over the meeting, and Kevin McClure took minutes. Ms. Mary Monroe, Interim Dean of the Northern Illinois Libraries, welcomed the librarians to campus and saluted them for their work with Federal Government Documents. Round Robin We introduced ourselves and talked about documents at our libraries. Earl Shumaker is retiring in June. He is creating some traveling exhibits of documents. Aric Ahrens is working with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on digitizing Air Force documents. Michael1e Stewart has developed a presentation titled Gov Docs 101 to give at Reaching Forward. Report on the Fall 2006 Depository Conference in Washington John reported on the Fall 2006 Depository Conference in Washington. There will be new leadership at GPO—a new Superintendent of Documents and a new Government Printer. There was a presentation on virtual depository libraries. A national project on this is needed. Information online does not need to be regionalized. It was pointed out that it can be difficult to find information about the federal government on the FirstGov web site, i.e. the Iraq Study Group. There has been a large cut in the Court Record Service Staff and that service has been moved to Virginia. . NIDL Projects The question of what NIDL can do to help with the information challenge was raised. Creation of a Wiki site to list all the NIDL libraries, their col1ection content, and strengths or expertise was proposed. Bill Cuthbertson will see if Loyola is willing to host this site. Sonja Nordstrom volunteered to edit the site. Kevin McClure proposed creating a listserv for the approximately 50 libraries in NIDL. Aric Ahrens will collaborate with Julie Collins on setting it up. There was discussion about a training pod to create a program to educate non-document librarians about fedgovdocs. Michaelle Stewart is willing to share her Gov Docs 101 program. It was suggested that the Northwestern University's web page could be expanded to include training materials. . A NIDL Advocacy Team was proposed. It would be similar to the ILA Policy Committee that looks at legislation that affects libraries. We could contact .each other over current issues. Kevin McClure and Michaelle Stewart will work together on this. Pooling the LST A grants from the spring state depository conference was suggested by John Shuler. He noted that the state has no objection to this. There was discussion of the possible requirements to set up a bank account and keep track of the funds. Also, some directors would not be willing to share the grant, as it is used to pay expenses to attend the conference. Kevin McClure and John Shuler brought up the idea of a special events web site, perhaps for the spring elections with information on voter registration, etc. They will lead the effort on this. The next NIDL meeting will be March 9, 2007 at Lewis University.
