Jeannie Struna was the coordinator for the year 2003.

The NIDL group met twice during the year: April 25 at Northern Illinois University, and on November 7, at Lewis University Library.

The Spring Meeting

The spring meeting notes have been lost, so no report can be made on that meeting.

The Fall Meeting

In the fall meeting, there was a lapse in leadership. The coordinator, Jeannie Struma, who helped organize the meeting, was unfortunately unable to attend. And because both the Coordinator (Kristina Waldron of Northwestern) and Secretary (Tiffeni Fontno of UIC) for the year 2003-2004 had left their respective institutions before the fall meeting, members at the meeting chose to hold a special election and elected new officers for the year. New officers: Coordinator: Robert Pruter, Lewis University; Secretary: Lynne Smith, NIU Law.

The fall meeting had the following presentations:

1. Bob Pruter gave an introduction to Lewis University, discussing its history and its library collection strengths.

2. Bob Pruter gave a talk on how he cleaned up the Lewis University Depository collection after years of mismanagement.

3. John Lamb and Mary Ann Atkins gave a presentation on the Illinois and Michigan Canal Collection, a special collection of local and canal history held by the Lewis University Library. Earl Shumaker of Northern Illinois University talked about the Depository Council Meeting in Washington, D.C. The new Public Printer spoke and told of being from the private sector and sees documents in more of a “business model” sense. This was not taken very well from some attendees who see the depository program as a public good, not an avenue to make money.

No next meeting and location was scheduled at the fall meeting.

Subsequently, Coordinator Robert Pruter worked with Aimee Quinn of UIC and RoseAnn Vonesh of the Oak Park Public Library to schedule a spring meeting at the Oak Park Public Library.
