The Federal Register, which is published by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Office of the Federal Register, is the official daily publication for rules, proposed rules, and notices of Federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents.


Here at Northwestern University the Federal Register can be accessed in several different manners:

The Federal Register in microfiche format is located in the Government Publications Microtext Room. Annual indexes are located at the end of each individual year with the exception of 1978, which is missing.

The Government Printing Office provides free universal access to this electronic version of the Federal Register. This site allows searching by volume/year, section, page number, Federal Register citation, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) citation, and keyword.
