Welcome by Paulette Harding, Head Government Documents Librarian.

Housekeeping items - Earl Shumaker, Chair.

Earl Shumaker, Northern Illinois University:

  • Elections will be held at Fall 2001 Meeting for Coordinator-Elect and Secretary.
  • NIDL web pages maintained by Beth Clausen at Northwestern. Send changes to Beth. Member's microfiche holdings/sets on NIDL home page.

Patrice attended the ILLINET Coordinating Council meeting in Springfield. News from State Library: Mike Ragen is Federal Documents Coordinator and Joe Natale is State Documents Coordinator. Created ILLINET member listserv. State-wide meeting planned of documents librarians; no date yet. Council looking at State Plan for 1991-92. Vacancies on Statewide Coordinating Council.

Beth attended Depository Library Council in San Antonio. Sparsely attended. GPO continuing its day to day operations while awaiting transition to a new administration. When a new Public Printer is appointed, current Public Printer Michael DiMario and Superintendent of Documents Francis Buckley will be expected to resign.

Ed Grosek writing a letter to First Lady Laura Bush in support of libraries.

Earl reported on FLICC (Federal Library & Information Center Committee) meeting in Washington, D.C. Sen. Ted Stevens (AL), a supporter of libraries, emphasized need for tangible products. LC awarded $100 million to fund electronic initiatives.

Issues facing depository libraries: 1) Where is FDLP headed? GPO sales program losing money; 2) Justify depository status -- how to handle? 3) Migrating publications; 4) Recruiting new documents librarians -- smaller candidate pools; 5) Electronic transition scary -- will I lose my job?
