Taiwan's involvement in Intergovernment Organizations (IGOs)

An IGO is a structure based on a formal instrument of agreement between nations. IGOs have relationships with their member governments which makes them good sources for statistics. Some IGOs only compile statistics on their member countries. Therefore, it is helpful to know which IGOs include Taiwan as a member.

Taiwan is NOT currently a member:

  • International Labour Organization (ILO)
    • The ILO maintains statistics for Taiwan in some of their publications such as the Yearbook of Labour Statistics and Laborsta the ILO online database.
  • International Monetary Fund (IMF)
    • Expelled from the IMF in 1980. Taiwan has not been included in annual statistical publications since 1980.
  • United Nations (UN)
    • General Assembly Resolution 2758 (XXVI) of 1971 voted to "restore all rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognise the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it."
    • Taiwan is not included in UN or Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) publications.
  • World Bank
    • Expelled from the World Bank in 1980. Taiwan has not been included in annual statistical publications since 1980.
