Using a Laptop Network Connection in the Northwestern University Library
Ethernet connections are provided in several locations in the University Library for patrons who wish to connect their laptop computers to the Northwestern University campus network. Users must have a 10baseT Ethernet card in their laptop that has been properly configured for use on the Northwestern University network. There are no modem ports available in the University Library.
The network connections in the library are configured to use the DHCP network protocol. DHCP is a network protocol that dynamically assigns an Internet address (IP address) to your computer. The IP address assigned will be valid for one session and will only work from a laptop port in the University Library. DHCP is the same network protocol that is used in most student residence halls, classroom buildings, and offices at Northwestern.
All laptop connections in the Library support 10 MB Ethernet cards. Connections in every location except for the Art Collection will also support 100 MB Ethernet cards.
Laptop connections are available in the following locations:
- Periodicals Room, 1st Floor, East Tower, Main Library. 14 connections around the outer parameter of the room next to the windows.
- Reference Room, 1st Floor, South Tower, Main Library. 28 connections around the outer parameter of the room next to the windows.

Where to get help for configuring your computer
The University Library staff is not trained to assist you with technical questions about installing or configuring your Ethernet card. Laptop consulting is available for Northwestern University students, faculty, and staff at the IT Information Center in the Kresge Centennial Hall, Room 57. Information is also available over the Web from the University IT Web site.
