POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the development of a program to promote knowledge in the issues of scholarly communication among Northwestern faculty and administrators, in cooperation with other- Northwestern University librarians; and to encourage faculty participation in strategies that support open access and facilitate more cost effective scholarly communication. In a complex, academic environment provide expertise and assistance in work with faculty, Academic Technologies, and Library staff in developing collaborative scientific enterprises using shared large data collections (e-Science). Develop and promote lecture programs, web sites, and other mechanisms to foster this awareness on campus. Help to develop open institutional repositories to enhance dissemination of research results from Northwestern University scholars. Responsible for the establishment of a committee to examine and manage scholarly communication issues library-wide. Responsible for faculty liaison with and collection management for some science departments, initially the Life Science departments, including Cognitive Sciences and Neuroscience, although specific subject responsibilities may be adjusted. Provides reference, instruction and outreach services to patrons of Mudd Library.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
50%: Initiate outreach programs among Northwestern University faculty and administrators to develop and promote knowledge in the issues of scholarly communication; collaborates with other Northwestern University librarians in establishing these programs. Encourage faculty adoption of publication strategies that provide better value for academic institutions including, but not limited to, SPARC initiatives, and including advising on retention of author rights and other copyright issues.
25%: Develops and manages collections of serial and monographic materials, including electronic products. Acts as a liaison with faculty in subject areas assigned; determines what information services best meet research and teaching needs of these departments.
25%: Provides reference and instructional outreach in cooperation with other Mudd Library staff. Develops, coordinates, and promotes instructional programs and outreach in the use of library and information services in the sciences and engineering.
QUALIFICATIONS : Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience. Undergraduate degree in science or at least two years experience as a science librarian in an academic or research library. Demonstrable understanding and interest in the current issues related to scholarly communication including open access and copyright. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, colleagues and other library users. Familiarity with science reference sources, both print and electronic. Experience in providing bibliographic instruction services. Preferred: background or experience in the life sciences; knowledge of HTML and web page design.
