PROFESSIONAL LIBRARIAN VACANCY
Position: Coordinator for Social Sciences
Division: Public Services
Reports to: Head, Academic Liaison Services
Position Summary: Coordinates the academic liaison work of approximately 9 subject specialists in social science cluster. Works with disciplinary coordinators for humanities, science and engineering, area studies, and general/interdisciplinary studies on collections, selection, and liaison activities common to all clusters. Additionally, as a member of Academic Liaison Services (ALS) Department acts as the University Library’s liaison to faculty, students, and other users in one or more social science disciplines. Provides specialized instruction, research consultations, and reference services in coordination with other public services departments of the Library. Develops and maintains subject collections in assigned areas of responsibility; specific subject responsibilities to be determined based on Library needs and successful candidate’s expertise. Manages allocated funds, endowment revenues, and gift accounts in assigned subject areas, and monitors fund management for selectors in the disciplinary cluster.
Responsibilities: Serves as Disciplinary Coordinator for Social Sciences, which involves coordinating academic liaison work of approximately 9 subject specialists; participation in interdivisional activities; monitoring use of collection funds assigned to selectors in the group; training, mentoring, and supporting subject specialists in group; contributing to planning and analysis activities of the group; working with development and implementation of large-scale weeding and remote storage transfer projects. Coordinators are also responsible for selection and liaison duties in their assigned subject areas, and for serving on cross-divisional committees. Acts as principal liaison between the Library and Northwestern faculty, staff, and students in assigned academic departments, institutes, and programs. Determines information services that best meet research and teaching needs of assigned areas, and works with other librarians to provide these services. Develops and promotes outreach services to constituents. Disseminates information about library holdings and services on a regular basis. Responds to requests for instruction and library services from constituent groups, and directs requests from patron community to appropriate selectors/academic liaisons. Guides collection policy in consultation with Head, ALS; Assistant University Librarian/Resource Management & Technical Services; and other librarians for assigned subject areas. Monitors approval plans and selects library materials in all formats in assigned subject areas. Maintains contact with vendors as appropriate. Creates and updates web-based subject guides in assigned areas of responsibility. Creates and distributes other subject-related information as appropriate. Participates in Library reference services, including service at a reference desk. Serves as a member of Management Council, an advisory group to the University Librarian.
Qualifications: Required: Masters Degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience. Background or experience in a social science discipline. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, colleagues and other library users. Preferred: A minimum of five years’ experience as a librarian at an academic or other research library, with collection development responsibilities, and reference experience. Reading knowledge of at least one language other than English. A graduate degree in one or more social science fields strongly preferred.

Salary: Dependent on qualifications and experience.
