Position title: Science Librarian (Half Time)

Reports to : Head Librarian, Science and Engineering Library
SUMMARY: The Science Librarian (Half-Time) has responsibility for liaison with one or more science and engineering departments (determined by the Library's needs and the successful candidate's background and experience), including collection management responsibilities: selection and deselection of monographs, databases, and other materials in the subject fields covered by those departments. This includes communication with faculty in those departments, and providing training for students and faculty in research databases and other information tools of relevance to the work of those departments. The Librarian will primarily be located in the Science and Engineering Library, and provide reference service there approximately eight hours/week. The Librarian also has supervisory responsibility of the branch libraries serving the Mathematics and Statistics departments, and the Earth and Planetary Sciences department, including providing services there as needed; the day-to-day operations of those units are under a classified staff position, with student workers. Depending on budget, there is future potential for conversion to a full-time position.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 50%: Develops and manages collections of serial and monographic materials, including electronic products. Acts as a liaison with faculty in subject areas assigned; determines what information services best meet research and teaching needs of these departments.
50%: Provides reference and instructional outreach in cooperation with other Mudd Library staff. Develops, coordinates, and promotes instructional programs and outreach in the use of library and information services in the sciences and engineering.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience. Undergraduate degree in science or engineering, or at least two years experience as a science or engineering librarian in an academic or research library. Familiarity with science/engineering information sources, both print and electronic. Experience in providing bibliographic instruction services.
SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience.
