POSITION TITLE: Electronic Archives Librarian (one-year appointment)

Responsibilities: The individual hired for this one-year position will assist in managing a data conversion project to mark up over 500 archival finding aids in XML using the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) standard. The Electronic Archives Librarian will work closely with the Library’s EAD Initiative working group and staff in University Archives, The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections and other special libraries to pre- and post-process finding aids sent out for conversion. In addition, he or she will also maintain and manage communications with outside vendors, and oversee the work of student assistants who will assist with pre-processing. In conjunction with the Digital Projects Librarian, the Electronic Archives Librarian will develop project plans and schedules and will provide daily coordination of the project. The Electronic Archives Librarian will serve as the primary contact with the conversion vendor, sending and receiving files, performing quality control and providing feedback on vendor work, and informing the Digital Projects Librarian and the EAD Initiative working group of ongoing issues and problems. Oversees in-house processes including working with staff in the Archives and the special libraries to restructure older finding aids to adhere to local and national guidelines, and to process completed EAD files for ingestion into the Library’s Fedora repository and for publication on the Library’s web site. The Electronic Archives Librarian will track progress, schedule meetings, prepare agendas and reports, and ensure that project goals are met. In addition, the Electronic Archives Librarian will lead the Library’s effort to evaluate, select and implement an online archival information system tool for the ongoing production of finding aids. This will involve arranging demonstrations, soliciting feedback from staff, confirming technical specifications and working with Library IT staff to arrange deployment. The Electronic Archives Librarian will also lead efforts to train staff on the online archival information system, both in workshops and one-on-one settings as needed.

Qualifications: Required : Masters degree in library science, archival studies or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of archival theory and practice and descriptive standards, including EAD and MARC. Strong project management skills, and experience leading or coordinating small groups and team projects. Strong technical skills, including standard office applications, as well knowledge of HTML, XML, or other encoding schemes. Preferred: Experience supervising student workers.

Salary: Dependent on qualifications and experience.
