Redesigning space
The Library creates a new home for the architecture collection
In January, the former Map Library room on the top floor of the Charles Deering Library was opened in its new capacity as a satellite reading room and shelving area for the Art Collection.
According to Art Librarian Russ Clement, the new room houses the collection’s architectural monographs, freeing much-needed shelving space in the Art Collection’s main Eloise Martin Reading Room. New carpeting and study tables with wireless Internet access have been installed. Clement expects that this area will house carrels for art history graduate students who are primarily researching the history of architecture. The room has the same operating hours as the rest of the Art Collection and offers long-desired direct public access from the top floor of the Deering building to Level 3 South of the Main Library through a linking hallway around the Ver Steeg Faculty Lounge. This makes access to the top floor of the Charles Deering Library easier for everyone, particularly disabled users who are now able to visit without the assistance of library staff members.
