AllAfrica posts 800 articles per day from more than 120 African newspapers

No longer will Northwestern faculty and researchers have to wait for newspapers to arrive in the mail from Africa. Headlines and news reports are now available through an electronic resource called AllAfrica, which posts approximately 800 articles per day from newspapers, news agencies, and publications throughout Africa. The database also contains reports, speeches, press releases, and announcements from governments, non-governmental organizations, and other newsmakers around the world. The database aims to "reflect the diversity of reporting, analysis, and commentary" from media at the international level.

Available in both English and French, the database also includes reporting and analysis from AllAfrica's award-winning journalists.

AllAfrica is the successor to the nonprofit Africa News Service, which for two decades produced prize-winning print and broadcast reporting for major media such as National Public Radio, the Washington Post, and the BBC. AllAfrica’s extensive archive includes articles from the Africa News Service dating from 1997.

This is an excellent research tool due to its searchable archive of more than 900,000 articles. Users can search a single newspaper or group of papers by date or specific time period. It is also possible to search by keyword and to limit a search by newspaper title, category, or language. Search options are located at the middle of the page.

At the left side of the screen are links to AllAfrica’s subject pages on “Sustainable Africa,” “PEACE AFRICA,” “BIZTECH,” and “Regions.” Also on the main page are links to topics ranging from AGOA/NEPAD (African Growth and Opportunity Act/New Partnership for Africa's Development) to food, agriculture, and rural issues.

The database is available at http://allafrica.com/search/adv_search.html or can be accessed through NUcat or Electronic Resources.
