GIS Day
November 14, 2007 was our 2007 GIS Day! GIS Day is part of the National Geographic Society's Geography Action, a year-long initiative encompassing key educational achievements such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week. The University Library hosted an event to promote GIS software, ArcGIS and My World GIS (developed by the Northwestern's School of Education, GEODE initiative), and geography in general. GIS Access on Campus
Due to the license agreement with ESRI, off-campus GIS access is not available at NU unless one purchases his/her own copy. Currently NU members can access the GIS software (ArcView 3.1 & the latest ArcGIS) in the following locations:
Government and Geographic Information and Data Services
University Library (Deering, Level 1)
InfoCommons, University Library (Main, Level 1)
The InfoCommons has over 50 computer workstations offering access to NUcat, electronic resources, and productivity software.
NUIT/AT Computer Labs
Most computer labs managed by Academic Technologies on the Evanston Campus now have ArcGIS installed.
Obtaining GIS Software
We can answer questions about free GIS software and/or proprietary software for educational use. The University Library's GIS licenses are available only for computers managed by the University Library. However, educational discounts for ArcGIS, for example, are also available to educators and students (in some cases) from ESRI. Please contact us if you need more information via this online form or send email to: c-maene.
