D.J. Hoek - Head, Music Library

D.J. HoekD.J. Hoek directs all operations, services, and collections of the Northwestern University Music Library and is the bibliographer for printed music, sound recordings, and rare music materials.

An active member of the Music Library Association, D.J. is Program Chair for MLA's 2008 annual conference, is a member of the Personnel Subcommittee, and is Editor of the Technical Reports Series, a co-publication of MLA and Scarecrow Press. Previously he served MLA as Coordinator of the Bibliography Roundtable and as a member of the Descriptive Cataloging Subcommittee. His honors include MLA's Kevin Freeman Grant and Walter Gerboth Award, and he has been a Distinguished Alumnus in Residence at Grand Valley State University. His second book, Analyses of Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Music, 1940-2000, was recently published by Scarecrow Press. Other publications include Steve Reich: A Bio-Bibliography (Greenwood, 2002) and articles and reviews in Notes, Reference and User Services Quarterly, Cataloging and Classification Quarterly, The Bulletin of Bibliography, and the All Music Guide.

D.J. holds a Master of Library Science with a Specialization in Music Librarianship from Indiana University, two Master of Music degrees in Music Theory and Composition from Bowling Green State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Grand Valley State University. Prior to his appointment at Northwestern, D.J. served as Music/Media Catalog Librarian at Wichita State University and as Head of the Music Library at Kent State University, where he also taught courses on music librarianship in KSU's School of Library and Information Science.
