Florida-High Speed Rail

In Febuary 2011 Florida Governor Scott rejected $2.4 billion in federal high speed rail funds. The decision came as a surprise for both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Research had predicted the investment would provide thousands of new jobs for a state with a 12% unemployment rate. State senators filed a bipartisan lawsuit to force the governor to accept the grant. However, on March 4th the Florida Supreme Court rejected the effort and the funds were permanently lost. The future of commuter rail lines in the state looks bleak as further cuts to funding are expected. Read more in the March 2011 issue of NARP News .
