To combat the major decline in the United States bat population, the Oregon Department of Transportation has developed a Bat Habitat Enhancement environment performance standard (EPS). The project works to "help engineers design bridges with bats in mind" (35). This effort includes adding texture and crevices similar to bat habitats found in nature. Thus far, 88 bridges comply with "bat habitation environmental performance standards" and the numbers continue to grow.
