Earthquake - Japan

The Great East Japan Earthquake has fundamentally changed the transportation infrastructure of north-eastern Tohoku Region of Japan. Tohoku Shinkansen service, operated by JR East, is a major rail artery across north-east Japan and was quickly restored. Sendai Airport, which suffered tsunami damage, has now resumed normal service.

Major portions of seven vital local railroad lines in the earthquake zone, however, remain closed, due either to earthquake and tsunami damage.
