Northwestern University Library is pleased to announce that fine payments made between May 14, 2012 and June 8, 2012 will be donated to the Henrietta Lacks Foundation.
Established by Rebecca Skloot, author of the 2011-12 One Book One Northwestern selection The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the Henrietta Lacks Foundation strives to provide financial assistance to needy individuals who have made important contributions to scientific research without personally benefitting from those contributions, particularly those used in research without their knowledge or consent. The Foundation gives those who have benefited from those contributions—including scientists, universities, corporations, and the general public—a way to show their appreciation to such research subjects and their families.
The “Fines for the Foundation” initiative offers a way for the library, and all of campus, to thank author Rebecca Skloot, the Foundation, and the Lacks family for the overwhelming impact of the 2011-12 One Book selection across the Northwestern campus.
“We see this as a way the library can acknowledge the broad impact and high level of engagement that this book as the One Book selection had on our campus throughout the year,” said Beth Clausen, head of Access Services. “Because we already have a mechanism in place for collecting funds, the library has a unique opportunity to contribute to the fund and demonstrate our appreciation.”
Fines from the Health, Law, and United libraries are not eligible for this program. Payment for fines from all other NU libraries may be made at the Main, Mudd, Schaffner, Math or Music circulation desks. Contact the Main Circulation Desk at 847-491-7633 or email@example.com
