The Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of a copy of the first edition of German Expressionist artist Wenzel Hablik’s Schaffende Kräfte (Itzehoe, 1909), a portfolio of 20 architectural phantasies and 20 accompanying aphorisms in various typographical styles. The 1909 printing of 30 copies is especially notable because Hablik was disappointed with the initial reception of the work and destroyed the original plates for 7 illustrations and 7 aphorisms. A posthumous publication of 100 copies in 1942, also in Special Collections, contains only the surviving 26 plates.
