Eleanor Taylor Bland (1944-2010)

With sadness @AALibnNU notes the passing of mystery novelist Eleanor Taylor Bland of cancer June 2. Bland is known for her 11 novels set in Lincoln Prairie, a stand-in for Waukegan, IL, with detective Marti MacAlister. MacAlister was the first female African-American homicide detective to be the star of a mystery series. The character, a former Chicago cop, moved to the suburb of Lincoln Prairie, following the apparent suicide of her policeman husband. After joining the Lincoln Prairie police force, she proceeds to solve suburban crimes by using urban smarts.
