New York M.T.A. and the "Future of Mass Transit"

Starting June 1st, MTA NYC begins an experiment in contactless debit and credit pay-per-ride technology. In other words, instead of issuing a MTA MetroCard (similar to the Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus programs) to charge patrons of the rail and bus systems, MTA would charge directly to individual debit or credit accounts through secure MasterCard® PayPassTM and Visa payWaveTM technology. The patron would "tap" their credit/debit card or device at select stations reducing the need for rail specific "passes," which is cheaper and more efficient for MTA and its users.
