Borrowing Privileges at NU for UIC Patrons
Currently employed full-time faculty and staff and currently enrolled students from UIC may gain access to Northwestern University Libraries during all open hours, except for the Pritzker Legal Research Center (Law Library) or the Galter Health Sciences Library, by showing their valid UIC ID at the library entrance.
While this agreement includes onsite access to selected licensed databases via guest/public work stations, it does not include remote/proxy access to databases.

This service is available to currently employed full-time faculty and staff and currently enrolled students from UIC who have borrowing privileges at UIC libraries.
The access and borrowing arrangements do not apply to research assistants; alumni; retired faculty (except emeritus faculty); visiting scholars; children and/or domestic partners of faculty, staff or students; fee borrowers; corporate borrowers; etc.
You may receive a card immediately by presenting your UIC ID at the Circulation Desk at Northwestern's Main Library (see hours below). Staff there will verify your status with the UIC Library and issue you a card on the spot. You may also apply for a card at the Schaffner Library, located on the Chicago campus.
Northwestern borrowers’ cards for UIC patrons are valid for a maximum of one year, and have an expiration date of May 15 of the current academic year. Cards may be renewed annually upon verification of current status with UIC.
UIC patrons may borrow books from Northwestern for 4 weeks from the date of checkout. All books are subject to recall with a guaranteed loan period of one week.
While Northwestern does not charge daily fines on regular loan books, there is a $1.00 per day fine for overdue recalled items. Once a book is 30 days overdue it is automatically marked with a “lost” status by the library system. A replacement fee and a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee are automatically assessed for every book overdue by 30 days or more. Replacement fees are a minimum of $50.00 to $125.00 per book (depending on the owning library or collection).
UIC borrowers who do not return overdue or recalled Northwestern books will have a block placed against not only their reciprocal privileges but also their borrowing privileges at UIC libraries until the material is returned. Any fines and fees incurred at either institution are the responsibility of the individual borrower.
* Items that are on reserve for a class are NOT included in the reciprocal borrowing program.
* UIC faculty members may borrow videos and DVDs from the Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center for a period of 3 days, and must return them directly to NU Library. Overdue fines for multimedia items accrue at the rate of two dollars ($2.00) per day. UIC students and staff are welcome to use items from the Multimedia Center's collection on site.
Renewals on general Northwestern library collection materials may be made in person or online via NUsearch. Three online renewals are allowed per book; after the third remote renewal, books must be brought in to start a new loan. Books can NOT be renewed over the phone.
In addition to returning books directly to Northwestern libraries, UIC patrons may return Northwestern Library books to the circulation desk at UIC. Please note: These books will be returned via the Illinois Library Delivery System and will not be checked in until they reach the owning library. Please plan accordingly by assuming a minimum 7-day transit time, during which time fees may accrue, depending on the due date. Patrons will be held responsible for any book returned in this manner until it is checked in at the owning library.
