NUcat Bookmark Mini-FAQ
  • What is NUcat Bookmark? The NUcat Bookmark utility allows you to create a URL that will point to a particular record or search result in NUcat without having to initiating a new session or type the search. Once you have created this URL, you may bookmark it in your web browser, email it to someone else, or use it as a hyperlink within a web page.
  • Why can't I just bookmark a NUcat page like any other web page? NUcat is session based. Once you begin a search, NUcat keeps track of what you have been doing. This allows you to do things like move from record to record without having to reenter your search. Unfortunately, the session information is encoded in every NUcat URL. So, when you try to go to a bookmarked page, you give NUcat information from an expired search session. The system can't interpret this information and returns an error.
  • How does the NUcat Bookmark utility work? NUcat Bookmark has two parts, the URL builder and the actual program. NUcat URLs contain all of your query parameters. So, the URL builder takes a user-supplied NUcat URL, strips off some unnecessary information (including your session information), appends the location of the NUcat Bookmark program and returns the result to the user in the form of a URL. This URL runs a CGI script that goes to NUcat, initiates a new session and retrieves the requested search results.
NUcat Bookmark does not work with the NU special databases available through NUcat, including the Africana Conference Paper Index, the Africana Vertical File Index, the Art History Slide Library catlog, the catalog of the Multimedia Learning Center in Kresge Hall, and the Transportation Article File.
