Preservation Department

The mission of the Northwestern University Library preservation program is to maintain and protect all collections in all formats. The Preservation Department promotes this mission with these activities:

• Program planning and administration, including grants
  
  
• Selection for preservation
  
  
• Physical treatment: library binding, conservation, mass deacidification
  
  
• Reformatting of brittle materials
  
  
• Environmental monitoring
  
  
• Education: care and handling of library materials
  
  
• Collection disaster preparedness and response

Established in 1984, the Preservation Department oversees the care, treatment and reformatting of the collections on the Evanston and Chicago campuses. There are four units in the Preservation Department: Materials Processing, Brittle Book Program, Conservation Services and Digital Technology.
