Brittle Books Program

Through the Brittle Books Program, library materials that are too deteriorated to be used or repaired are reviewed for replacement, reformatting or withdrawal from the collection. Items for review are identified by circulation staff at the point of reshelving. Each title is searched to determine the availability of reprints or microfilm replacements. The title is then reviewed by a subject specialist who recommends one of several preservation options. This process ensures that preservation resources are being expended on materials of lasting value to the collections.
