Access Services

The Access Services Department strives to provide convenient, seamless delivery of resources to users, wherever they may be, whether the resources are from the University Library collections or from collections of other libraries. The action philosophy of the department is "Get it For Them" or GIFT.
 

Three units make up Access Services and all provide key services to our communities:

• Circulation Services

In addition to book "check out" the Circulation Services [1] unit provides several specialty services including paging, courtesy holds, and faculty office delivery for the Evanston Campus.

• Multimedia, Periodicals, and Microform Services

The Periodicals and Newspaper Reading Room [2] and the Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center [3] make up the Multimedia, Periodicals, and Microform Services unit.  The Periodicals and Newspaper Reading Room houses the current issues of magazines and periodicals.  The unit provides newspaper resources in all formats, comfortable seating, quiet study space, scanning/printing centers along with public computers, and scanning and printing of the Library's vast microform and microfiche holdings.  The Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center houses the library's strong and highly circulated video collection, provides viewing carrels for individuals needing playback equipment, and manages three screening rooms for instructor-led media presentations.

• Resource Sharing and Reserve Services 

Resource Sharing and Reserve Services consists of Interlibrary Loan [4] and Reserve [5].  Interlibrary Loan provides loan services for Northwestern patrons and to world-wide libraries and their patrons, and Materials Scan and Delivery, a service that provides scanned copies of library resources to Northwestern users. Reserve includes regular reserve of books and media, as well as electronic reserve of articles and book chapters delivered to courses through the university's Course Management System.
