Dr. Margaret Burroughs, prominent Chicago artist, educator, and social activist, passed away last month on November 21. Burroughs was a fixture in the Chicago community, from her teaching days at DuSable High School and Kennedy-King College to co-founding the DuSable Museum of African American History in 1968 and serving as Commissioner of the Chicago Park District beginning in 1986. She was a prolific artist evoking themes of family, community, and history in her paintings, sculpture, prints, and poetry.
