Mission Statement

The Northwestern University Archives supports the missions of Northwestern University and the Northwestern University Library to create and disseminate knowledge, advance student learning, and support research and teaching.

The University Archives works with Northwestern University records creators and holders to identify and acquire key records of enduring historical and administrative, legal, or cultural significance. We collect significant records of organizations affiliated with Northwestern University and of associated entities within the local community.  We acquire as well the manuscripts of individuals associated with Northwestern including faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Along with records and manuscripts the University Archives also collects Northwestern-related publications and other pertinent items in a variety of formats, both physical and digital.  In accordance with archival principles and standards, we preserve, organize, and create access to the materials collected.

We make our resources available to the Northwestern community and to the outside world through onsite and offsite reference services, through our Web presence, through the exhibition of selected materials, and via new technologies to serve an ever wider audience.
