The Great East Japan Earthquake has fundamentally changed the transportation infrastructure of north-eastern Tohoku Region of Japan. Tohoku Shinkansen service, operated by JR East, is a major rail artery across north-east Japan and was quickly restored. Sendai Airport, which suffered tsunami damage, has now resumed normal service.
