NUL Manuscript Librarians Jason Nargis and Benn Joseph’s feature article, “From the Heroic to the Depraved: Mainstream and Underground Comic Books at Northwestern University Library,” was recently published in College and Research Libraries News (May 2012), the widely read membership monthly of the Association of College & Research Libraries.
Their successful recent exhibit of the same title presented an overview of the history and scope of comic books, drawing examples from the extensive comic book archives in the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections. Items in the exhibit ran the historical gamut of the genre from a vibrantly-colored 15th-century illuminated Bible, to mainstream superhero comics, to underground 1960s counterculture comix.
The dynamic duo of Jason and Benn have struck before. In June of last year, they landed the cover article in the ILA Reporter with “Comic Books: Superheroes of Special Collections.” See: http://www.ila.org/pdf/Reporter_0611.pdf , page 8. They have also presented their research, highly illustrated (of course!), to audiences at the Evanston Public Library and The Mather.
