Periodicals and Newspapers Reading Room

Located at the east end of Level 1, the Periodicals and Newspapers Reading Room houses the University Library's collection of current, unbound issues of more than 2,800 periodical titles, more than 200 daily newspapers; and other domestic and international newspapers, with a special emphasis on African newspapers. The Reading Room is staffed and open for browsing all hours that the University Library is open.

Within the Reading Room, the Center Square houses high-use and general interest periodicals, and the remainder are shelved in alphabetical order in the East Ranges at the back of the room. The most recent issues of selected newspapers are located on tables near the front of the room, with recent back issues available in hanging folders in the northeast corner. The Reading Room offers photocopiers and microform reader-printers for duplicating from this non-circulating collection. In addition, the Reading Room also houses several computer workstations that offer access to NUcat, library databases and the Internet. Study carrels are located around the perimeter of the room, with carrels in the northeast corner providing electrical and data ports for laptop users.

A substantial portion of the Library's microform collection is also housed in the Reading Room and is kept in self-service cabinets and shelves for easy access. Other microforms stored elsewhere in the Library may be requested from the service desk in the Reading Room and used on the microform readers and printers there.

Older, bound issues of periodicals are shelved according to call number in the research towers on Levels 3, 4 and 5, while many older issues of newspapers are available on microfilm. All periodicals, newspapers and microforms are listed in NUcat.

The Periodicals and Newspapers Reading Room telephone number is 847-491-7680.
