Library Resources for Research in Psychology

II. Locating Print and Electronic Journals

In addition to PsycARTICLES within PsycINFO, the library has a growing collection of electronic psychology journals. Even more are available through other multidisciplinary databases like Expanded Academic ASAP and Academic Search Elite (listed below). However, by far the largest collection of psychology journals the library has is in the print collection. The best source for locating the library's journals—both printed and electronic—is NUcat, the library catalog.

Once you have identified an article, for example:

the next step is to search for the journal title in NUcat, selecting the Journal Title search from NUcat's Search in: menu.

You may find that the library has multiple subscriptions to the same resource, for instance one copy at the main library and another at the law library.

Click on the journal title to get detailed information about the library's holdings.

In our example, we are looking for Volume 26, issue number 4 which is dated August 2002. NUcat indicates that this issue is among the Current issues of this journal that are housed in the Periodicals & Newspapers Reading Room on Level 1 of the main library. If however, we were looking for an article from Law & Human Behavior that was published in volume 20 (1996), you would need to take down the journal's call number—340.05 L4147—and then use the library's call number location guide to determine where in the library to find items with this call number. The call number guide is available to pick up at any service desk in the library, and is posted within the elevators and in the elevator lobbies. It is also available online. According to the guide, items with call numbers beginning with 340 will be on the 4th floor, North tower.

If a journal is available electronically, NUcat will display a "link inside" icon in the Titles display.

Again, you must click on the title to get detailed holdings information, including the URL for the electronic journal.

NUcat will also tell you when the journal you are searching for has full text articles available in a different database.

It is important to note that nearly all electronic journals and databases can be accessed only through the campus network. If you are off-campus and not dialing into the NUnet modem pool for internet access (if you have, for example, a cable modem or DSL), you will need to run the Virtual Private Network client. This utility authenticates you using your NetID and password on the Northwestern network from another internet provider. The Virtual Private Network client is available on the Fall 2002 NU Software CD-ROM and can also be downloaded from the University IT web site at <http://www.tss.northwestern.edu/vpn/>.
