by type of business, location, size, etc.

The following company directories will allow you to identify companies through screening on a variety of criteria, such as by Industry or SIC and / or NAICS codes, location, sales, company size, and public vs. private companies.

Enter site and click on "Build a List." The Kellogg School of Management subscribes to the premium content of this directory of public and private US and foreign companies. It is available within the NU community. Go in and click on Build Company List.

Directory information on over 12 million U.S. businesses, from large corporations down to small local businesses. Searchable by multiple criteria.

Gathering Further Information on Companies

Once you've identified companies, your next step will be to find background information, whether that be about the company's financial situation, products, history, recent news and events, etc. Along with visiting the company's own website, look to the following sources...

Financial and background information on 30,000 US and foreign public companies, including annual reports.

Business news and research articles from over 1,500 periodicals. A majority is full text online.

Business news and research articles from several thousand periodicals. A majority is full text online. Also includes some company reports and profiles from Datamonitor. These reports include SWOT analyses (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats).

Includes full text of several thousand general news and business news sources. Enter site and click on "News" or "Business".

Includes over 5,000 business publications. Mostly full text online. Searchability is not as advanced as ABI and Business & Industry, but there is more content. Includes full text of the Wall St. Journal. Enter site and click on "Search".

Both of the above resources provide inside info on various companies and employers, as well as industries.

Searching for literature in the field of Sociology and related fields

Sociological Abstracts NU Community
Citations and abstracts of articles from approximately 2500 journals, as well as conference papers, dissertations, book reviews and selected sociology books. The database covers sociology and sociological topics in fields such as anthropology, economics, education, medicine, community development, philosophy, demography, political science and social psychology.

Web of Science NU Community
Contains three individual databases which may be searched separately or simultaneously: Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Among these databases, virtually all areas of scholarship are covered. Users may search by topic, author, source title, or by cited reference: authors and titles from an article's bibliography. Searches may also lead to related records: articles with citations in common.
